'Surreal' return to Troy for J.P. Sportman

Troy, NY - In his return to the Capital Region, Schenectady's J.P. Sportman went 1-for-4 with a single as Vermont's No. 3 hitter in Wednesday's 3-1 win over Tri-City.

Dozens of his friends and family members watched from the first base stands, just a long fly ball from La Salle Institute where he graduated in 2010.

"I mean it is pretty cool to be standing here right now because my high school's about 100 feet to the left," said Sportman during Wednesday batting practice while nodding in the direction of the LSI building next door. "It's surreal, I guess. I can't even explain it."

Sportman also spent countless hours during high school just down the hill to the north at Geer Field, playing for the South Troy Dodgers.

A night after playing in the New York-Penn League All Star game in Brooklyn, the A's 27th round draft pick sure did enjoy his homecoming.
