Joe Mahoney comes home
TROY -- Catholic Central grad -- and former South Troy Dodgers' slugger Joe Mahoney -- is back home in the Collar City for the holiday. He's thankful for his wife and infant daughter. And he's looking forward to his next major league opportunity.
Mahoney became a free agent for the first time earlier this month.
Over the past two seasons, he has enjoyed big league cups-of-coffee with the Orioles and Marlins, appearing in 11 total games. On April 20th of this year, he picked-up his first major league base hit -- an RBI-single in Cincinnati off of Bronson Arroyo..
Later that week -- in Minnesota -- Mahoney's finest day as a big leaguer. The 26-year-old 1st-basemen went 4-for-8 during a doubleheader against the Twins.
Then three days after that -- in Miami -- his first, and so far only major league home run came against Cubs' righthander Scott Feldman. The ball landed in the upper deck at spacious marlins park. And yes -- Mahoney did get the baseball back for safe keeping.
Mahoney expects to sign with a new club sometime in the next few weeks.
And -- he reports -- that after battling oblique and hamstring injuries throughout this past season, Mahoney is now fully healthy.
