Amsterdam man arrested for assaulting toddler

AMSTERDAM -- Police say an Amsterdam man is responsible for assaulting the 2-year-old son of his girlfriend.

Authorities say Earl Stevens, 33, was left in charge of the child on Wednesday night while his mother was out. When she returned, Stevens told her the boy had fallen off a counter. But when officials received a call on Thursday afternoon from a concerned citizen, they started an investigation that they say led to Stevens' arrest.

According to investigators, the explanation of the toddler's injuries was not consistent with the physical evidence. They also say Steven's 6-year-old child witnessed the incident that resulted in the injuries.

Officials say the young victim was taken to St. Mary's Hospital for treatment and evaluation. He was diagnosed with a broken leg and hematoma to the forehead as well as contusions to the eye, back and legs. He has since been released from the hospital and placed in the care of his biological father.

Stevens has been charged with assault and endangering the welfare of a child, among other charges. Police say their investigation is continuing, and additional charges are possible.
