Schenectady man impaled on Union gate

SCHENECTADY -- Officials at Union College say a Schenectady man impaled himself on the Blue Gate at Nott Terrace and Union Street.

Campus safety officers responded to the incident shortly before 7 a.m. When they arrived on the scene, near the main entrance to Union College, Gualberto Cartagena, 28, told them he tried to jump the gate when he lost his footing, slipped and fell. He said the spike on top of the gate penetrated several inches deep on his right side near his ribs.

The man was able to extricate himself and waited until emergency crews arrived. He was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to Ellis Hospital.
