The Bottom Line: New twist in IRS phone scam

NISKAYUNA -- A new false promise is in place, looking to lure taxpayers into paying up unnecessarily.

A Bottom Line Alert on the ongoing IRS phone scam, that CBS 6's Dori Marlin has been reporting on for months.  Only now, it seems scammers are sweetening the pot to get people to fall for it.

Viewer Bob first brought this to Dori's attention:  He says he got a call from a number with a 202 area code in Washington, D.C.

The caller claimed to be with the IRS Tax Revenues Department, that Bob was the subject of an audit, and had an unpaid balance of $3,987.

But here's the small twist:  The caller said Bob could set up a process to settle that amount, and that once he did, Bob could also claim that amount on his taxes for 2015.

The lines in this call might be different, but The Bottom Line from the IRS is the same:  The agency says it will never collect money in this manner, and will always first notify taxpayers by mail.
