Police: Suspect followed woman, stabbed her in Colonie woods

COLONIE -- Police say a Level III sex offender fallowed a woman off a bus before dragging her into the woods and stabbing her repeatedly.

James Sayers, 43, is expected to be charged early net week. Authorities say he followed the 50-year-old victim for 1.2 miles after they both got off the same bus traveling from Albany around 6 p.m. on Monday.

After following her, police say Sayers grabbed the victim by the neck and dragged her into the woods by Wall Street. He then allegedly stabbed the woman multiple times in the face, throat and side of her body.

Colonie Police Chief Steve Heider says that if the woman had not fought back against Sayers, she would have died. She is currently recovering, and in stable condition.

Sayers is a registered sex offender, convicted of first degree rape involving a 9-year-old victim. He also served 14 years in jail for his involvement in a robbery. The suspect is currently in custody on a parole violation for removing an electronic device off his ankle.
