Far Rockaway man arrested after Schenectady shooting

SCHENECTADY -- Police arrested a Far Rockaway man after they say he shot someone in the early morning hours on Thursday.

Authorities say Brian O'Malley, 35, displayed a silver handgun as he approached a man and a woman near Fourth Avenue and Pleasant Street just before 1 a.m. The victim struggled with O'Malley over the gun when it discharged several times, hitting the victim once in the hand.

According to officials, the victim was able to break free and flag down a cop near Crane Street. When officers searched the area, they were able to take O'Malley into custody after a short foot pursuit.

O'Malley has been charged with attempted murder, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration. Authorities say they don't know why the suspect went after the victim, who does not know O'Malley. The victim was treated on the scene and taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening in juries.
