Rochester man sentenced after bust in Saratoga Springs PD sex sting
ALBANY -- A Rochester man will spend 45 years in prison after he got caught in a Saratoga Springs Police sex sting.
John Dooley, 57, is a registered Level III sex offender with two previous convictions for sexual abuse of a minor. He was arrested by Saratoga Springs in May 2012 after traveling there to meet someone he thought was a 15-year-old girl named Kara, but turned out to be an undercover cop.
The incident led a jury to find Dooley guilty last year of attempted enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity, attempted production of child pornography, and committing a felony offense involving a minor while already required to register as a sex offender.
Prosecutors argued that Dooley met "Kara" in a Yahoo! chat room and communicated for nearly 2 months. The undercover investigators repeatedly told the defendant that "Kara" was only 15. Dooley told "Kara" he would travel to Saratoga Springs, rent a motel room, have sex with her, and capture the encounter via photo and video. Police say when he checked into his motel room in Saratoga Springs, he brought with him various sexual devices, vodka, computer equipment, cameras and presents for the girl he thought he was going to meet, including lingerie.
