Docs show city knew about unstable building before collapse
ALBANY -- A city councilman has documents showing the city knew about structural problems at 1 Columbia Place six months before it partially collapsed on Tuesday.
Ron Bailey, who represents the 3rd Ward, said the building has had problems for years.
It's obvious it was going to fall, you can look at it you can see the cracks in the front of it from the roof on down even on the other side. Its going to fall and I hope with them working on it now that they can stabilize it, said Bailey. When this wasn't getting done the city should have sent people in to start stabilizing that building because it needed to be saved.
On Monday, part of the building's east side collapsed as workers were attempting to stabilize it. The city's Chief Inspector told CBS 6 no violations would be issued. He did not return a call seeking comment on Friday.
Bailey said there are other buildings in the city with structural issues, but it is not always apparent where they are located.
Some of these buildings are so bad and there's no reports on them. Next week we might have some more crumbling because no one knows the real condition of the building and there's no annual reports being put in on these buildings, said Bailey. The only way we're going to get results is somebody is going to have to die in one of these buildings in order for someone to wake up and say something needs to be done with these abandoned buildings.
