Saturday was the second busiest day for the Saratoga Race Course
SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Saturday was one of the busiest days of the year at the Saratoga Race Course. When the gates opened, thousands of fans came pouring through.
"We expect a large crowd today, one of the things we've done at New York Racing Association is we have shifted all racing focus to coincide with big event days, and today is one of those days," says John Durso Jr. Spokesperson for the New York Racing Association.
It was the $1.5 million Whitney Stakes, featuring some of the best older horses in the country.
"We have bigger purses, we have better quality horses, we have better quality races too and more things for all of our guests to do here," says Durso.
Traffic was backed up near the entrance of the race course Saturday. Fans came from near and far, we met some who came from New Jersey and have been coming to the Spa City for years.
"It's beautiful the people are very nice and generous and it's a warm welcome everytime we come to visit," says Michael Graziano of Springfield, New Jersey.
For those who rely on the racing season for business like those at Hat-Sational, they rely on days like this for a flood in customers. This year was no exception.
"Attendance, except on the rainy days has been pretty much standard or equal to last year," says owner Roger Locks.
The Whitney is the second busiest day for the track, second to the Travers. That will be happening on August 23rd.
