Rotterdam emergency services continue to serve with no contract

Rotterdam's town board Wednesday tabled a proposed contract for the agency providing the town's ambulance service and voted against voting on a prior version of the contract that was written last month.

Rotterdam Emergency Medical Services continues to operate despite the lack of a contract. Last year the town board voted for REMS to provide the service rather than Mohawk Ambulance.

REMS Operations Director Dean Romano told CBS6 her believes some board members only favored REMS to satisfy those residents who strongly demonstrated their allegiance to REMS. He said he thinks those members want to create burdensome reporting requirements - such as vehicle maintennance records - in hope of REMS failing to meet the requirements - something that might open the door to Mohawk taking over.

Town Supervisor Harry Buffardi said that is not the case. Buffardi said he thinks the town and REMS are very close to reaching agreement. A town board work session is planned in the next few weeks to come to a final contract proposal.
