NY cardiology group to repay $1.3M from referrals

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- Federal authorities say a cardiology group has agreed to repay the federal government $1.3 million plus interest to resolve allegations that its payments to doctors for referring Medicare patients to other providers violated federal law.

U.S. Attorney Richard Hartunian says the settlement with Cardiovascular Specialists, doing business as New York Heart Center in central and northern New York, resolves allegations that in 2007 and 2008 its physician partners were paid partly based on the volume or value of their referrals for radiology scans.

He says medical decisions should be based on what's best for the patient's health, not the doctor's finances.
