Flooding, rescue in Niskayuna
The decision to attempt to drive down a flooded street in Niskayuna Wednesday afternoon led to the need for a rescue from local firefighters. Though not considered an emergency, the save mut have come as relief to the man and woman who did not make it down Merlin Drive.
"We were originally dispatched to a car in the water with occupants," says Assistant Fire Chief Chris Nobes. "Upon arriving that car was unoccupied, however, another car drove through the water and became disabled with two occupants, one being a disabled individual."
Nobes and another man were able to walk to the stranded van - the water level did not reach the bottom of the windows - but they needed an inflatable raft to get the elderly man and the woman to a nearby lawn.
As the drama was unfolding on Merlin, people on that street and in other parts of town were dealing with flooded yards and basements.
Nancy Haas, a 34-year resident of Huntingdon Drive, said this is the third time she has seen this much flooding at her house.
"We get water problems constantly because of the sewers," Haas says. "They don't drain and they just back up, either in the back or in the front...it's just so disgusting."
