Public gets to weigh in on Civic Center auction
GLENS FALLS -- The public will get a chance to weigh in as Glens Falls moves towards a possible sale of its downtown Civic Center.
The Common Council is scheduled to take up a resolution allowing a public auction of the property, following a public hearing that starts at 7:20 on Tuesday. The center has been open since 1979, but Mayor Jack Diamond says it is too much of a drain on the budget.
The Civic Center is valued at $1.8 million, but the appraisal points out that the facility runs at a loss, has an outdated design and sits in a small population center. A potential buyer would have to honor current contracts with the management company, and the new American Hockey League franchise, the Adirondack Flames.
If the Council agrees, the auction will take place on August 18th.
