Heavy rain causes flash floods in eastern New York

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- Several roads and highways have been closed by flooding as severe thunderstorms rolled through eastern New York, bringing torrential downpours, high winds and lightning.

In Albany County, flooding closed Route 20 in both directions between Fuller Station Road and Route 158 at 2:40 p.m. Wednesday.

In Schenectady County, Interstate 890 eastbound between exits 5 and 6 was closed by flooding at 2:35 p.m.

In Sullivan County, some local roads were closed and water 3 feet deep forced evacuation of Main Street in Jeffersonville, near the Pennsylvania line. Public Safety Commissioner Richard Martinkovic says 5 inches of rain or more had fallen as of 3 p.m., with storms expected to continue for another hour.
