Man arrested for Malta murder

MALTA -- Crime scene investigators spent Monday sifting through the home at 9 Meadow Rue Place in Malta after the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office said Charles Wilkinson, 68, killed his wife Kathleen Wilkinson, 65. Sheriff Michael Zurlo said that Wilkinson is charged with second degree murder.Sheriff Zurlo said the murder happened during a domestic dispute and that Charles Wilkinson continued to live in the house with his wife's body over the weekend.A deputy visited the home Sunday, the Sheriff said, because the couple's son called and asked for a welfare check on his mother. She hadn't been heard from in a few days. Sheriff Zurlo said Charles Wilkinson answered the door when the deputy showed up."After a period of discussion at the door, Charles Wilkinson allowed the deputy in the residence, at which time the deputy located the body of Kathleen Wilkinson deceased on the floor," said Sheriff Zurlo.A felony complaint filed in Malta Town Court alleges that Wilkinson choked his wife.Saratoga County District Attorney James Murphy said the autopsy on Kathleen Wilkinson found the cause of death asphyxia by strangulation.Murphy and Zurlo said the couple lived in the area for about ten years. They said Wilkinson was a painter for some time and then a security guard at Globalfoundries. Globalfoundries said Wilkinson was assigned there for four years, but worked for an outside security company.Murphy and Zurlo said Wilkinson was a police officer in Nassau County in the 1980s."Anytime we have a law enforcement official as a defendant it's particularly difficult, but Sheriff Zurlo and his officers were able to obtain substantial proof relative to the case," said District Attorney Murphy.CBS6 found foreclosure paperwork in the Saratoga County Clerk's office for the couple and the home they were living in. We asked if that could have anything to do with the alleged crime."As part of any investigation, the couple's financial circumstances are part if the investigation and will be looked into," said Murphy. The Sheriff said Wilkinson is in the county jail without bail. He said he doesn't know of any domestic violence history for Wilkinson.Neighbors told CBS6 they are shocked by these allegations and said the couple seemed happy and was friendly.
