Assembly Minority Leader calls for Justice Center Investigation

ALBANY - New York State Minority Leader Brian Kolb wrote a letter to Governor Cuomo asking him to investigate whether the Justice Center is fulfilling its mission to help people.

This was in response to a claim by Michael Carey whose autistic son was killed when a worker from the state's O.D. Heck Center tried to subdue him during a bus ride.  Carey uses this incident to make a claim that the agency is not protecting those vulnerable citizens.

Carey claims that the Justice Center's abuse hotline receives 7,500 reports every month.  The spokesperson for the Justice Center said that callers are told if someone is in immediate danger to hang up and call 911 for immediate help.

The Justice Center said, "all reports of abuse and neglect which occur in facilities or programs under the Justice Center's Jurisdiction are assigned a case number, logged into a centralized case management system, investigated and tracked until a determination is made."
