Jury selection to start in New York dorm killing

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) -- Jury selection is set to begin for the murder trial of a man who beat his girlfriend to death in her upstate New York college dorm room.

Clayton Whittemore reportedly told authorities that he snapped when he attacked 18-year-old Alexandra Kogut at the State University of New York College at Brockport in September 2012.

Attorneys are expected to begin choosing jurors in Monroe County Court on Monday for a trial that has been delayed several times. In March, Whittemore's attorney was given more time to review psychiatric reports.

It's expected Whittemore will claim he was emotionally disturbed at the time of the killing, which could allow a conviction on a lesser charge.

He's pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder.
