2 inmates killed, hundreds injured in Florida jail explosion

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) -- County officials say an apparent gas explosion that rocked a jail in the Florida Panhandle killed two inmates, injured as many as 150 people and caused the building to partially collapse.

Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan says the jail is almost completely destroyed. He says three inmates are unaccounted for and one corrections officer was seriously injured.

At the blast site in Pensacola Thursday, firefighters are entering the building. Pieces of glass and brick are scattered on the ground. The front of the building appears to be bowed out. Authorities have blocked off roads leading to the jail.

County spokeswoman Kathleen Castro says the explosion happened about 11 p.m. CDT Wednesday at a booking area at the Escambia County Jail, injuring as many as 150 inmates and corrections officers.
