Young children knock over dozens of Iowa headstones

CENTRAL CITY, Iowa (CNN Newsource) -- The recent vandalism of dozens of headstones at a cemetery in Central City, Iowa, has been the talk of the town lately.

That's because of the age of the headstones that were knocked over, and the age of the culprits. The county sheriff's office said the vandalism happened on April 12th. About 60 headstones were knocked over or torn out of the ground completely, causing an estimated $3,000 in damage.

Many of the headstones are engraved with death dates from the mid-1800s. Authorities say three children, ages 6 and 7, confessed to the crime.

The county sheriff's office said the cemetery's board of trustees is working with the parents of the children, and no charges will be filed.
