Livestock truck carrying cows overturns in Berne

BERNE -- A livestock truck carrying cows overturned in Berne on Tuesday.

The incident happened Tuesday morning at the intersection of Rock Road and Route 443. The road was closed while crews worked to clear the scene.

Authorities say the truck was taking a load of 104 smaller cattle from Tommell's Farm to Kansas. Five of the cows died on the scene and another six had to be euthanized. Officials say some of the remaining cattle were taken back to the farm where veterinarians were on hand to check on them.

The Albany County Sheriff's Office says the trailer did not appear to be overloaded, but the speed the truck was traveling was imprudent. The driver of the truck was ticketed following the incident.
