NYRA to spend $8.5M upgrading its 3 racetracks

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) -- Historic Saratoga Race Course is on track for some upgrades.

The New York Racing Association says it will spend $1.9 million on several improvements in time for the 2014 summer meet at the track, which turns 150 years old this year.

Plans include the addition of about 750 high-definition television sets throughout the track, new high-definition large-screen video boards, an enhanced sound system, improved wireless capabilities, more picnic tables for the backyard, restroom upgrades, a new entertainment area for families and an expanded event tent.

NYRA pegs Saratoga's annual economic impact at more than $200 million across the region. Last summer, more than 860,000 people visited the track during its 40-day meet.

NYRA also says it plans to spend $5.9 million for similar improvements at Aqueduct and about $680,000 at Belmont Park.
