Fire, heavy smoke damages Schenectady Church

SCHENECTADY - An issue with a furnace is determined to be the cause of a fire that damaged a Schenectady church Friday night.

Fire crews responded to St. Anthony's Church at 331 Seward Place at around 6:30 Friday night.

Officials say the fire started in the basement ceiling and went through the first floor.  The hundred year old structure suffered heavy smoke and water damage, as well to the back of the church behind the altar. The building was determined to be structurally sound and can be repaired.

Officials say three were treated for smoke inhalation.
