Proposed bill would ban SeaWorld orca shows

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Newsource) -- Following some momentum with recent talk of killer whales in captivity, a California lawmaker wants to ban the orca shows at SeaWorld San Diego.

State assembly member Richard Bloom's legislation would also ban captive breeding programs and prohibit importing and exporting the animals. Bloom says he felt moved to draft the legislation after watching "blackfish." The documentary raises concerns about the safety of SeaWorlds trainers and its treatment of orca whales. SeaWorld calls the documentary "propaganda."

The bill would not prevent SeaWorld from putting killer whales on display in an aquarium-like setting, but it would prohibit the park from using the cetaceans in performances or for entertainment purposes.
