UAlbany student reports stranger in room

ALBANY -- A University at Albany student told police she woke up early Sunday morning to a man standing in her room engaged in an act of public lewdness.

She said the man ran from the room after she screamed.

I'm shocked. I can't even believe that happened, said Monica van Ommeren, a freshman at U. Albany.

Campus police said it appears the victim left her door unlocked. They issued a campus-wide safety alert Monday afternoon in hopes students will remember to lock their doors.

Access to dorms is restricted to students with campus swipe cards, but some students admitted they hold the door open for others.

It's pretty easy to get into a building even without a card. You just ask someone to open a door for you, said Nilda Rivera, a freshman at U. Albany.

Campus police did not have a description of the suspect. Some students said they believe it is an isolated incident and were unconcerned.

It's pretty good. There are cops that roam around from time to time so it's not that bad, said student Fanny Lin. I always lock my door because you never know what happens and it just doesn't feel safe. You should just lock your door always.
