Rensselaer authorities respond to reports of gas odor

RENSSELAER -- Authorities in Rensselaer responded to two separate reports involving gas odors on Monday.

The city's Assistant Fire Chief Phil Smith said the calls came within 15 minutes of each other on Monday afternoon. Gas was shut off in the area of Third Street in response to one of the calls, and the street was shut down between Harrison and Glen.

Smith said the problem came about when ice came off the roof, breaking the meter where it enters the home. He says they evacuated a few homes as a precautionary measure, but everything was okay by early evening.

The second call reported an odor of gas near 2nd Avenue, but officials say they did not find anything.

National Grid also responded to the scene, and officials say there is no danger to the public.
