Man in custody after Knox fire

KNOX -- Kenneth Fortuin, 49, was arraigned Thursday afternoon after police say he lit his home on fire and threatened responding firefighters.

Firefighters from the Knox Fire Department were called to 75 Saddlemire Road around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. Police said Fortuin blocked access to his driveway with logs and threatened to hurt anyone who approached the burning home.

Firefighters retreated and notified police. Officers spent hours searching for Fortuin on his property. Once located, negotiators spent most of the early morning hours getting him to safely surrender.

Fortuin was arraigned at town court around 1 p.m. on charges of 3rd degree arson and Obstructing a Firefighting Operation. He was remanded to the Albany County Jail without bail until a preliminary hearing Monday.
