State Police investigate fatal accident in Stuyvesant

STUYVESANT, N.Y. (AP and CBS6) -- State police say they're investigating the death of a 26-year-old woman who jumped out of a moving vehicle as it traveled on a Hudson Valley road.

Troopers say the woman, identified as Jessica Sherman from Claverack, was a passenger in a vehicle that was heading south around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Columbia County town of Stuyvesant, 20 miles south of Albany.

Police say the woman jumped out the passenger-side door and sustained fatal injuries. They say the incident appears to be accidental in nature, and that the victim suddenly exited the vehicle that was driven by an acquaintance for an unknown reason. After investigating, authorities believe Sherman was not hit by the moving vehicle or any other vehicles. No criminal charges are pending or anticipated as of Wednesday afternoon.

Route 9 was closed for several hours after the accident.
