Group pushes for dividing the state
An effort is underway to split New York into two separate regions.
Under the plan, downstate, which would cover the area from Westchester County south, would still be called New York. The rest of the state would become New Amsterdam.
Backers say the differences between the two regions are so great, the best option is to split New York into two separate governments, without actually creating a 51st state. That would mean there would be no need for federal approval.
The idea could be considered at New York's next constitutional convention in 2017. You can read more about the idea at http://www.newamsterdamny.org/
