Mass. towns hope to capitalize on CVS tobacco ban
LEE, Mass. (AP) -- Local health officials in western Massachusetts hope to capitalize on the decision by CVS to phase out the sale of tobacco products by seeking to curb tobacco sales in Berkshire County.
The Berkshire Eagle reports that James Wilusz, director of Tri-Town Health Department, said the CVS announcement on Feb. 5 could spur more communities to do the same. Tri-Town oversees the county's state-funded tobacco awareness program in a 12-community collaborative in western Massachusetts.
Pittsfield, Lee, Lenox and Stockbridge prohibit tobacco sales in pharmacies or in stores with pharmacies, among 70 cities and towns statewide that have imposed such a ban since 2009. Adams will do so on April 1.
Wilusz plans to meet with the North Adams Board of Health next month to discuss a tobacco ban in pharmacies.
