Lawmaker proposes food stamp restrictions

ALBANY -- A State Senator held a press conference on Tuesday about proposed changes to EBT cards.

Senator Tom Libous held the press conference at the State Capitol to put restrictions in place that would redefine how, and where, EBT cards could be used. Currently, people who receive food stamps can legally spend them at liquor stores, casinos and strip clubs.

Libous is arguing that up to $122 million in federal money could be at stake if New York does not bring itself in line with the federal government and eliminate those options. He is urging the Assembly to join the Senate and pass the Public Assistance Integrity Act.

The Assembly has let the bill die the past two years.
