Smoking plow truck set off fatal NY Thruway crash

WOODBURY, N.Y. (AP) -- Authorities say a fatal seven-vehicle pileup on the Thruway was set off when a state plow began spewing smoke that forced another motorist to swerve.

State police investigators say a Thruway plow's engine compartment began smoking as the vehicle traveled on Interstate 87's left northbound lane around 10:45 a.m. Wednesday just north of Exit 16 in Woodbury, Orange County.

Troopers say a car following the truck swerved out of the lane because of limited visibility from the smoke and hit another vehicle. A car driven by 53-year-old Mark Becker of Hillsdale, N.J., slowed in the right lane.

A tractor-trailer then rear-ended his car, pushing it into the back of another tractor-trailer.

Becker was pronounced dead at the scene. Six other people were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
