Police: Man's call about being lost was a hoax

LYNN, Mass. (AP) -- A Woburn man is facing charges for allegedly making a hoax 911 call to police to say he was lost in the woods and freezing to death.

Four police officers and three firefighters spent several hours searching a wooded area of Saugus on Wednesday morning looking for the man. The temperature was 7 degrees and intermittent snow was falling.

Authorities tell The Daily Item during the search the suspect was sitting in a warm hotel room watching from the window.

A judge Thursday ordered Stephen Cornwall held on $1,500 bail and ordered a mental health evaluation. He pleaded not guilty to making a false 911 report.

His lawyer said the 59-year-old Cornwall has a history of mental illness and is distraught over the recent death of his wife.
