Police cracking down on holiday drunk drivers

ALBANY -- Police in Albany warned drivers that if they plan on driving drunk, they better be prepared to end up in handcuffs.

Officers will be combing the streets from now until New Years looking for anyone that has had too much to drink. Those wishing to plan ahead to avoid the problem can take advantage of a campaign aimed at helping people get home safe.

The Albany County STOP-DWI will hold its annual New Year's Even 'Operation Safe Ride.' Anyone who has been drinking can call **LAW from a mobile phone or 1-800-LAW-1010 for a free ride home.

The initiative is sponsored by the Law Firm of Martin, Harding & Mazzotti, and has been a huge success in years past. Thousands have been taken home safely since the program's inception in 1982, and there have been no alcohol-related fatalities on New Year's Even in Albany County.
