Police use sandwich to get naked man off ledge

Portland, Ore. -- Police officers used a sandwich to convince a naked, suicidal man off a ledge Saturday morning.

Around 11:10 a.m. officers were called to a parking structure where a man appeared to be experiencing a behavioral crisis.  Once there, they found him sitting on the ledge threatening to jump off while cutting himself with a knife.

Crisis Intervention Officers began speaking with the man who told them he was hungry. Police then went to a nearby hotel, which donated a sandwich, and used it to move the man away from the ledge.

In a news release, police say the unidentified man was quickly taken into custody and is being evaluated at an area hospital. He could face vandalism charges for damage caused to vehicles in the garage among other charges as the investigation continues.
