Niskayuna considers closing school, expects deficit
NISKAYUNA -- A committee made up of 40 stakeholders presented
three consolidation options Tuesday to the Niskayuna School Board. The school
board established the committee in March as the district faced a multi-million
The committee recommended closing one of the districts schools. Two plans call for closing one of the five elementary schools, while a third recommends closing Van Antwerp Middle School.
Superintendent Susan Kay Salvaggio said despite increasing taxes this year it will again have a deficit, which may require closing a school.
[All districts] are all dealing with some of the same issues and now were five years into that. Weve made all the easy decisions. Weve made some really tough decisions at Niskayuna. We have been brave, we have been courageous, but theres more to be done, said Salvaggio.
Earlier this year the district considered closing Van Antwerp, but decided against it after parents and community members voiced opposition. At Tuesdays meeting all of the speakers were against closing a building.
I wish they were closing no schools, but at least if thats the thing that they do [I hope] they dont disrupt the middle school set up. I dont like what theyre talking about a [grades] 5, 6 class grading. I dont like that at all, said resident Sally Magid.
Superintendent Salvaggio expects to determine the districts deficit in the next month. The board will then determine if it wants to consider any of the proposals from the committee.
