2 who were missing found after apartment blast

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- A Birmingham fire official says rescue crews have found a man alive and freed him from the rubble of an apartment explosion. A woman who was missing was also found but her status wasn't immediately known.

Birmingham Fire Rescue Service Battalion Chief C.W. Mardis tells The Associated Press the man is in critical but stable condition. He was one of two people who were unaccounted for after the predawn explosion Tuesday.

Mardis says the man and a woman apparently were asleep in a first-floor apartment when the explosion occurred shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday. The building collapsed, trapping them.

Mardis says the concrete slab from the second flood was on them and crews were able to use hydraulic jacks and lifting blocks to lift the concrete enough to get to them.
