Chaotic Meeting on Rotterdam EMS Changes

ROTTERDAM -- More than 100 people packed the monthly Highbridge Civic Association meeting to discuss upcoming changes to the towns EMS service.

Starting at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, Mohawk Ambulance Service will be contracted to respond to calls within the town. The contract with Rotterdam EMS ended Monday night and the town is using Mohawk until requests for proposals are submitted.

It's terrible thinking of people losing their jobs right in time for the holidays. We haven't even received an official letter from the town that they're not renewing the contract, said John Dybas, President of the Rotterdam EMS Board.

REMS will continue to operate as a secondary provider until the town board considers its proposal and makes a decision next month.

Board members and town leaders who supported the change initially accepted an invitation to Mondays neighborhood meeting, but did not attend.
