Leaders demand answers in bungled rape case

UPDATE: The ADA involved in the case has resigned according to the District Attorney.  Laura Kruegler, who was in Rensselaer City Court for John Halacy's appearance Wednesday, is said to have failed to file a speedy trial rights waiver on time.  Because of that, felony rape charges against Halacy were dropped.

RENNSELAER COUNTY -- Members of the Rensselaer County Legislature say they want to know how the District Attorneys office managed to bungle a rape case so badly, the alleged rapist walked free.

John Halacy was facing felony rape charges after police say he had sexual contact with 13- and 14-year-old girls. Those charges were dropped because the DAs office didnt prosecute the case in a timely fashion.

On Friday, a letter demanding an explanation on behalf of taxpayers was sent to District Attorney Richard McNally.
