NY making $4.5M more grants for food banks
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- New York plans to award $4.5 million in additional grants for food banks to help offset the 5 percent cut in the federal food stamps program that began this month.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the 15 percent increase in the state program will go to 46 emergency providers statewide who distribute to food banks.
He says about 13 percent of New Yorkers don't have enough to eat, and the federal program cut amounts to about $300 million statewide.
The Hunger Action Network and other advocates plan to present the Cuomo administration with a statewide anti-hunger plan later Monday.
A temporary federal benefit from the 2009 economic stimulus stopped in November. The federal agriculture department says that means a family of four receiving food stamps gets $36 less a month.
