Firefighters battling Rockland County brush fire

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. (AP) -- Firefighters are battling a brush fire in a steep and rocky area of Rockland County.

The blaze was reported at Clausland Mountain in Orangeburg around 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Journal News says because of the treacherous terrain firefighters had intended to monitor the flames after dark and return at daybreak. But it says firefighters were seen beating back flames at 2 a.m. Friday. They responded as the encroaching flames neared residential areas west of the mountain.

No injuries have been reported.

Dry conditions are partly to blame for the brush fire. Orangeburg Fire Chief Neil Lynady says fallen leaves provided fuel for the blaze.
