Police warn of phone scam

ROTTERDAM -- Police are warning residents about a possible phone scam popping up in the area.

Officials say they have received complaints about calls from individuals posing as grandchildren in an attempt to get money. The callers reportedly tell the person on the other end of the line that they have been arrested in Mexico, and need money sent via Western Union to get out of jail.

Local authorities have issued tips to help keep seniors safe from these sorts of scams:
  • Be suspicious of anyone calling unexpectedly, requesting money be wired, especially to a foreign country.
  • Never provide identifying information such as a name, as the caller will use this to further the scam.
  • Do not wire money unless you have verified the location your grandchild and the supposed emergency with family or friends.
