Heroic NY woman topic of talk at Civil War panel

ALBANY,  (AP) -- A doctor from New York who remains the only woman to receive the Medal of Honor is the lead-off topic for the second day of a Civil War conference being held in Albany.

Matt Farina, a retired physician from the Albany area, will give a talk about Dr. Mary Walker during Saturday morning's session of the 2013 New York Civil War Conference at the State Museum.

The three-day conference is being sponsored by the Capital District Civil War Round Table to commemorate the war's 150th anniversary.

Walker was born in Oswego County in 1832. She graduated from Syracuse Medical School in 1855 and became one of the nation's first female doctors. She served as an assistant surgeon for the Union Army during the Civil War, and afterward was awarded the nation's highest military decoration.
