DEC: Open 2 Adirondack fire towers for tourism

ALBANY (AP) -- State officials want to reopen two Adirondack fire towers and are seeking public input.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation wants to restore the Hurricane Mountain fire tower and the St. Regis Mountain fire tower. The restoration would allow full public access, and the plans also call for the inclusion of interpretive materials related to the towers' history.

If implemented, the restorations are expected to result in increased tourism in Essex and Franklin counties.

Both towers have been closed for more than 20 years and both are listed on the state and national registers of historic places. That allows government officials to look at alternatives that would allow for the preservation of the towers.

The DEC is accepting public comment through Nov. 15.
