Troy Crime Tied to Drugs Trade

Det. Sgt. John Colaneri of Troy Police tells Jerry Gretzinger in 2012, the department made a total of 118 arrests on drug charges.  They're nearly at that level through September of 2013.

Much of the city's recent rash of crime, both violent and otherwise, has been tied to the booming drug trade.  Colaneri says Route 7 in Troy is a "nexus" to the Capital Region and Vermont for dealers out of New York City.

But the department has risen to the occasion.  The special operations unit has grown from 4 to 8 members, and the busts being made are big.

In one recent bust, $115,000 in cash was recovered.  1320 bags of heroin have already been taken off Troy streets this year alone.

Colaneri says tips from residents have been an enormous help.
