Grandmother accused of killing grandson to let judge, not jury, decide fate

SCHENECTADY -- The Schenectady grandmother accused of beating her grandson to death will let a judge, not a jury, decide her fate.
The Daily Gazette reports 43-year-old Gloria Nelligan is facing second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter charges for allegedly beating 8-year-old Sha'hiim Nelligan over a prolonged period of time and causing his death.
Nelligan refused the right to a jury and will have a judge rule on the case.  Nelligan's defense is that the boy hit his head on the bathtub the morning he died.
Opening arguments begin Monday.
