Joe Bruno undergoes surgery for cancer

ALBANY (AP) -- A spokesman says the former leader of New York's Senate, who's facing a second federal fraud trial in December, is recovering from surgery have having a cancerous tumor removed from his kidney.

Sen. Joseph Bruno, now 84, was acquitted in 2009 of five counts and convicted of two others that were overturned on appeal.

He has denied wrongdoing and says he had outside business interests like most of New York's part-time lawmakers.

Prosecutors have refiled those two charges against the Rensselaer County Republican, once considered one of the three most powerful officials in Albany. They say he accepted more than $400,000 from a businessman for helping with state grants.

Spokesman John McArdle says Bruno was resting comfortably Thursday at Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center following surgery and looking forward to his recovery.
