Sheehan wins Albany Democratic mayoral primary
ALBANY -- Kathy Sheehan won the Democratic primary Tuesday
evening, defeating Corey Ellis 66-35. About 45 minutes after the
polls closed, Sheehan took the stage at a campaign rally in the
Albany Pump House to announce Ellis called her to concede the race.
Sheehan, the city's current treasurer, is favored to win the election in November because Albany voters are overwhelmingly Democrats. If elected, she will become the first female mayor in the city's history and only the fourth mayor to be elected since the 1940s.
Ellis held a small campaign party at his headquarters along Central Avenue where he watched the results come in. Tuesday marked his second unsuccessful bid to become mayor. He faced off against current mayor Jerry Jennings four years ago.
Sheehan said she will take the next few days off and then return to the campaign trail to prepare for the November elections.
