Home at last, pups arrive from Afghanistan

Harris is a 6 month old pup, born in Afghanistan, who's now happily calling the Rensselaer county home of Major Drew Pinckney his own.

Harris was actually 1 of 7 puppies, born to Sheba, a dog that Pinckney and the rest of his team adopted while in Western Afghanistan.

"After a while we became pretty attached to the mother," says Pinckney.

After 2 months, they realized Sheba was pregnant and built her a shelter.  Harris had 6 siblings, together nicknamed the Magnificent 7.  When Pinckney and his team were preparing to return home, one of them had the idea to bring the pack of pups with them.

A group of rescue organizations helped raise the nearly $20,000 they needed, and yesterday, Harris completed his long, expensive journey to the Capital Region.

"He's been in transit for 4 months, 3 months in Kabul, Afghanistan and last month in kennel in Long Island, so this is his first chance to have free range," says Pinckney.

"He's going to live a good life, get a nice place to live, eat well and have some friends to enjoy his time with.'
