Sheehan ahead in the polls days before mayoral primary

ALBANY -- It's down to the wire for Democratic Mayoral candidates Corey Ellis and Kathy Sheehan. Both are vying to take over for Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings, the second longest serving mayor in the city's history.

A new Sienna poll released Sunday shows Sheehan up in the race, 68 to 20 percent over Ellis. But she's not slowing down her fight.

"We're certainly not changing our game plan, I was out knocking doors yesterday and I'm going to knock on doors all day today, tomorrow, i'm going to go to work like I always do, then after work i'm going to knock doors again," Sheehan tells us.

She says that being city treasurer for four years has given her a deep understanding of Albany finances. She says the city needs to embrace technology to bring in new businesses.

"Albany has such tremendous potential, this is a great city but we need to get our city government to focus on rebuilding our neighborhoods, creating strong neighborhoods, which means connecting people to jobs, it means making sure all of our streets are safe, and we've got to start and trim down and make sure that we have a city government that our residents can afford," she says.

But according to Sheehan, it's the capital city's neighborhoods and urban blight that need to be addressed, before Albany can move forward.

"The public safety aspect of it, the urban blight aspect of it if we attack that with a holistic plan recognizing that all of our departments have a role to play, in making sure our neighborhoods are strong, then we'll have the base to move forward," she says.

Meanwhile, her opponent Corey Ellis is not backing down. The 42 year old former arbor hill councilman says he has the hands on experience in this historical race.

"I've had the experience of running city government, of being on the council, I've had the experience and the vision for always standing up for the people in our city," Ellis says.

"My vision and the things I worked on as a council memeber have shown people that corey ellis will be the people's mayor," he adds.

With just days left until Tuesday, when the people of Albany head to the polls, both will be actively campaigning to make sure your voice goes in their favor.
